Mission WSOP

Talk about lack of updates…

Hey everyone still willing to look here and see a complete and utter lack of updates on a day to day basis.  Thought I would drop in and provide some updates and throw out an idea that I’m working on for the site.

First, let’s hit the updates.  Online, I’ve gone to playing mostly PL Omaha for the past month or so.  This has been a positive bankroll move and I am currently sitting at $3900 on Full Tilt, $270 on Poker Stars and $110 on Bodog bringing the Online Poker bankroll to a highwater mark of $4280.  So, in roughly a year, I have turned $50 into $4,280… that’s a 8460% ROI if my calculations are correct.  I would say that is money well spent.

Some minor issues with my online game have been my inability to devote much time to poker.  I went to Niagara Falls last week and have been focused on my writing for Baseball Digest Daily and Seamheads and loving this baseball season which totally provides me with little time to play.  I qualified for the WSOP qualifier on Poker Stars and then forgot about it and missed the final qualifier on Saturday… DOH!!!!!!!  I haven’t been following the WSOP as religiously as I normally would since I am still a bit disappointed that I wasn’t there this year but it is amazing to see how many pros have won bracelets this year… I think it will be a good thing for the game.

Live poker has been nearly non-existent for me.  I played in the $200 Buy-In Stud event at the Borgata Poker Open, lasted about 6 hours and busted out somewhere in the middle of the pack.  In our home games, I notched a 2nd place finish and won last night.  Last night’s game was pretty amazing from the standpoint that I was never really in trouble until I got heads up and then had to double up by hitting an 8-outer to get to even in chips.  Then, I slowly but surely took out Drew who is one of the tougher players there.  I haven’t calculated the points for the site after last night’s results but I am pretty sure that win will catapult me to a place I don’t think I’ve ever been in in a season — first on the points list.  I am always near the top but this is my first stop there.  I also notched my fifth win and 18th cash in 46 tournaments.

As far as my thoughts on this site.  As soon as this season’s WSOP ends, I will be focused on accomplishing building a poker bankroll big enough to tackle at least one event at the WSOP in ‘09.  If anyone out there reads the site and has a desire to do the same in ‘09 and also has an interest in blogging about it, I will be looking to add a few writers to the site in the next two months.  My e-mail address is bjoseph22=at=comcast.net (sub @ for =at=).  One thing I’m looking for is people willing to practice similar strict bankroll management practices to prove that a smart player can work their bankroll successfully.  This would all be discussed prior to giving access to the blogging piece.  If no one responds, then it will just continue to be me. :)

A Quick Update And Some Random Comments

I went 1-2 in the NBA last night and am now 37-34-4 (52.1%).  My poker has slightly improved recently with a final table in a Razz tourney on Full Tilt that gave me my first BAS cash in 3 attempts and need one more in my last 3 attempts to be profitable.  I also cashed in both LAPT events on Saturday with a 3rd in the Heads Up and 2nd in the Ultimate Cash Game.

The Sixers looked great again in AI’s return to Philly with the Nuggets.  They took down Iverson’s squad on an emotional night for Iverson and now the Sixers are 16-4 in their last 20 and only the Rockets have been better.  It’s ironic the Nuggets are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs because they are in the West and the Sixers are in 6th in the East since the Nuggets are 6 wins better than the Sixers.  I hope the Nuggets can bounce back and slide into the playoffs.

Speaking of sliding, after 22 wins in a row, the Rockets have lost 2 in a row and fallen to 3rd in the West.  A few more losses and they won’t even have a first round home court advantage.

Is everyone going to end up in nude pics or videos on the ‘net at some point.  This week’s nude ‘net stars: Kristin Davis from "Sex & The City" and Audrina for the fake-reality show "The Hills.  You know you want to look… here’s Kristin (she denies they are her) and here’s Audrina (she sent them to Playboy when she was 19).

Just watched "48 Hrs" with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.  I doubt this movie would fly today.  Nolte throws around the N-word and degrading racial remarks throughout this movie.  It’s amazing it flew then and it definitely wouldn’t fly now.

People who get too much attention: Al Sharpton and Ashley Alexandra Dupre… enough said for me.

The NCAA tourney starts in about 8 hours.  My Final Four: Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin and Xavier.  I love Carolina to take it down.  Go Heels!

Two LAPT Tourneys Tonight, More NBA Stuff And Call Girl “Kristen”

Tonight is our most unique LAPT event yet with two tournaments in one.  We’re supposed to start at 8 pm with the Heads Up tournament which is always fun followed by The Ultimate Cash Game which was a success last year also.  We’ll see how this turns out.  It could be a hot mess or it could be a blast… it’s usually a blast but you never know.  The momentum of this season was zapped last tournament when we got just 6 for the bigger tournament.  The big buy-in seemed to run people off for some reason.

My bankroll is barely over $2000 which is soooo frustrating.  I have a leak in my game at the moment that I can’t seem to plug up thanks to my ruthless aggression in tournaments, it seems to kill me in the cash games.  I got to get better at shifting gears or else I’ll be continuing this backward slide.

The NBA is so much fun this year.  The Sixers comeback against the Bull last night was amazing.  Everyone contributed and they were able to wipe away a 16 point deficit to win.  It was funny to read that Samuel Dalembert was not having fun playing basketball.  Every time I watch that guy play I thought that.  I can’t imagine playing basketball and not having fun doing it and he gets paid.  But I am sure there are plenty of people out there that don’t have fun at their job and don’t make millions.

The Rockets won again… and now they face-off with the Lakers on Sunday.  It will be interesting to see the media reaction to the win streak if they drop this game to the Lakers.  I’m sure a few will downplay the Rockets amazing streak if they drop this one to the Lakers… but just a few.

Ashley Alexandra Dupre is not a name I should know but thanks to our fascination with sensationalizing criminals, I konw it.  Amazingly, no charges have been brought against the most beloved hooker since Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman".  Can someone explain to me why she is getting a pass?  If we found out tomorrow that Governor X of -fill in the state- was a drug addict, we wouldn’t seek out the drug dealer and make them a star.  Anyone who spends $5000/hour on a hooker has to have some serious issues and hopefully after he is punished, he gets some.  Let’s just hope that this girl doesn’t escape this unscathed.  She was wrong in this thing, too.

It’s estimated her MySpace page received 5,000,000 hits before it was shut down.  And now her music is available on some other site and they are actually charging a fee now (it was previously available for free).  Dupre was naked on the cover of the New York Post (think Janet Jackson on Rolling Stone only her own hands) thanks to uncovered modelling pics.  Her tell-all interview appeared in the New York Daily News.  The only question I have now is how jealous is Britney Spears right now?

I hope this thing fades quickly but I have no hope that it will.  Sex sells in America and strange and unusual sex sells even more.  Case in point, I once mentioned Annalynne McCord and nude in the same blog entry and since then it has been the #1 search hit for people coming to my site… I bet they were really disappointed!

Weekend Recap, The Marino Argument Explained And Another GoogleTrends Hot List

What happened this weekend?

  • I won my 2nd event of Season III of the LAPT (my home game) and took home $302 to increase my total winnings to $2835 in 38 tournaments.
  • I went 3-1 again in the playoffs and am now 6-0 in games not involving the Giants.
  • I failed to cash in the HORSE Championship but I did play-by-play for the final table which was fun. (I could only think of three songs about horses!)
  • I failed to cash in the Silver Iron Man thanks to a bad beat.
  • My bankroll climbed back to the $2125 range.
  • Steps were taken to wrap up the Stake & Stock event on Surfers Poker as it grew closer and closer to a close.  The $2.20 Satellites to the Sunday Night Guaranteed tournaments contain the worst caliber of player I have ever played with.
  • I played well enough over the weekend to repair all of the damage done by my Sit & Go Madness fiasco.  My Sharkscope is back where it was a week ago… flirting with +$200.

Sunday’s Actual Results

San Diego 28, Indianapolis 24 (Prediction: San Diego 24-21)

LT got hurt, Merriman was OK but nothing special… but the Chargers came through in a big way.  Norv Turner!  Who knew?  Now, the Chargers must face the daunting task of trying to knock off the undefeated Patriots and they might have to do it without Phillip Rivers, Ladainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates may not be healthy.  No matter how my heart feels, I doubt there is any reason I can come up with to pick the Chargers but I know who I will be rooting for.

NY Giants 21, Dallas 17 (Prediction: Cowboys 27-20)

I’m 0-2 in picking Giants games and Packers fans everywhere are praying I don’t pick the Packers next week.  I did say that Romo was capable of a clunker at any point and there was another.  Romo has come out of his first two appearances in the NFL Playoffs not looking Playoff-ready.  And now I still have to suffer watching a Manning in the Championship Round of the Playoffs.

As far as the Marino thing, I know that public opinion would put Marino in the Top 10 of all quarterbacks but I have to disagree.  Here’s why:

First, anyone that has won two Super Bowls would have to go ahead of him.  That puts Montana, Brady, Elway, Staubach, Aikman, Starr and Bradshaw ahead of him.  That puts Marino no higher than 8th.

Next, I have to look at those players who have won one Super Bowl and would be considered the majority of their teams offense or gone to the Super Bowl more than once.  That puts Favre, Peyton Manning and Steve Young ahead of Marino to move him to 11th (out of the Top 10).

Then, there are the debatable ones.  I put four more QBs ahead of him but there are another 5 or so that I would accept an argument for.  Here are the four I felt were definitely ahead: Johnny Unitas, Warren Moon, Fran Tarkenton and Jim Kelly.

Beyond that, I think there are a few that could be put in Marino’s class.  Len Dawson, Ken Anderson, Dan Fouts, Sonny Jurgensen and Phil Simms would all be comparable to Marino in their accomplishments with the exception of Marino’s inflated numbers.  In the end, I decided against those QBs and settled with Marino at 15th but I can’t see putting him any higher.

Debunking the usual pro-Marino arguments

"LOOK AT HIS STATS!"

Which one?  The 252 interceptions? Or the 8,000+ pass attempts (1,100 more than any player in the history of the NFL with the exception of Brett Favre).  It’s pretty easy to rack up the yards and TDs when all you do is drop back and launch 50 times a game.

"LOOK AT HIS SUPPORTING CAST!"

Would that be 3-time Pro Bowler and 2-time All-Pro Mark Duper?  Or maybe 4-time Pro Bowler and 3-time All-Pro Mark Clayton?  How about when they added 5-time All-Pro and Pro Bowler Keith Jackson?  Or at the very end of Marino’s career when he had 2-time All Pro and 5-time Pro Bowler Irving Fryar to throw to.

"OK… SO HE HAD SOME RECEIVERS TO THROW TO… BUT WHAT ABOUT A RUNNING GAME?"

First of all, let’s get something straight, Marino would have never accepted a role where he wasn’t the main weapon.  Watch any game led by Marino and this guy threw more fits on the sideline than TO and Randy Moss combined.  The ‘86 Dolphins were 4th in Yards/Attempt in Rushing but 28th in attempts.  They were 10th in Yards/Attempt in ‘87 but 24th in attempts.  The team then continued to refuse to run the ball and built their team around the passing game.

The one argument that no one can dispute is that an 8-9 playoff record and just one Super Bowl appearance is not amongst the Top 10 playoff performers at the QB position.

Taking Down The Home Game And Sunday’s Picks

Saturday was a fairly successful day as I picked both winners in the NFL, I was profitable overall for the day, I turned my free $20 shot on Gutshot Poker into $25 and I took down our home game tournament in stylish fashion.  On the flip side, I was bad beat out of the Silver Iron Man despite playing extremely well and I failed to qualify for Surfers Poker’s HORSE Championship.  My bankroll is now at $2119+$25 on Gutshot which bumps it to $2144.

Yesterday’s predictions went fairly well:

Actual Results

Packers 42, Seahawks 20 (Prediction: Packers 27-17)

"Green Bay rolls as Shaun Alexander fails to show again."  I think that’s a pretty accurate description of the game as Green Bay outscored Seattle 27-3 after spotting the ‘Hawks 14 points.  Shaun Alexander had 9 carries for 20 yards.  The Pack are going to be tough for whoever wins today.

Patriots 31, Jaguars 20 (Prediction: Patriots 31-17)

A late Jags field goal robbed me of the glory of being spot on in this game.  Who can beat the Patriots?  I think the answer might be no one.

Sunday’s Round Two Predictions

San Diego 24, Indianapolis 21

Here’s another example of where I may be picking with my heart rather than my head.  This got me in trouble last week when I picked the Bucs to beat the Giants when I actually didn’t think it was going to happen.  This time I have a little more faith in the Chargers as they come into the playoff game with 7 straight wins and boasting bragging rights against Indy since they beat them earlier in the year.  The problem is going to be that Indy is a juggernaut at home… but they are just 3-3 against playoff teams and 0-3 versus playoff teams not from Florida.  LT and Shaun Merriman have gigantic games and the Peyton Manning I remember from two playoff seasons ago will return… and I’ll call last year a fluke. :)

Cowboys 27, Giants 20

This game will go back and forth but the Cowboys will prevail.  The Eli Manning for President campaign will come to a screeching halt after this week’s game although Tony Romo still makes me nervous as he’s always capable of putting up a clunker.  My prediction is TO plays and has a big game.

So, I’m 5-1 in 6 games picking winners yet I haven’t had a strong enough feeling about any game with the exception of the Packers yesterday to put any $$$ on them against the spread.

Continuing To Struggle And Saturday’s Picks Plus Why Dan Marino Isn’t A Top 10 Quarterback

I can’t get my bankroll to $2200 and I’ve now dipped back down below $2100 again.  I’m now at $2070 and haven’t had much success lately without following it up with at least a set back or two.

The NFL playoffs are down to 8 teams with 3 of them featuring quarterbacks that I would consider to be Top 10 Quarterbacks not just currently in the NFL but in all-time NFL history: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre.  Before I get into that list, I will make my Saturday picks:

Green Bay 27, Seattle 17

Green Bay rolls as Shaun Alexander fails to show again.  I was counting on him last game but he never showed and I’m assuming theirs nothing left in the tank.  Favre plays well and continues on this magical run.

New England 31, Jacksonville 17

This is that game where everyone has decided to annoint the Jags as the great underdog that for some reason is now considered to be destined for greatness but I think it might be time for a reality check.  The Pats haven’t lost all year, and to the chagrin of Mercury Morris, they aren’t losing this week either.

Saturday is the HORSE Championship qualifier on Surfers, the Silver Iron Man on Full Tilt and the Bounty tournament at our home game for the LAPT.  I need to step up my game and get back into the groove.

Finally, back to my list of the Top 10 Quarterbacks in NFL History and where Marino would fall on my list (an argument I will elaborate on a later date!):

  1. Joe Montana
  2. Tom Brady
  3. John Elway
  4. Steve Young
  5. Brett Favre
  6. Johnny Unitas
  7. Roger Staubach
  8. Peyton Manning
  9. Troy Aikman
  10. Bart Starr
  11. Terry Bradshaw
  12. Warren Moon
  13. Fran Tarkenton
  14. Jim Kelly
  15. Dan Marino

The Countdown To January 6th Begins…

More poker, slowly grinding toward $2,000 (at a little over $1600 now).  I’ve been in a writing rut recently so I haven’t blogged all that much.  Here’s my latest happenings and thoughts:

I qualified for the Silver Freeroll on Full Tilt again.  This is my 3rd shot and what is even better is that Full Tilt has thrown in bonus money for any of their December Iron Men and added bonus money for those who have qualified in any other month.  I stand to earn $225 in bonus money in January thanks to my Iron Man efforts.

January 6th will be a huge day… it’s the return of Omar!  Who is Omar?  Omar is the greatest character in television history.  The modern day Robin Hood of HBO’s "The Wire" is being featured in their commercials which I’m hoping means that Omar will be featured in what looks like will be the final season of "The Wire".

Saturday is my home game tournament.  I missed out in cashing in the last one and actually exited fairly early.  I’m in 2nd in points and would like to climb back to the top of the leaderboard.

I have a much improved SharkScope score since I have full access to the site and have been able to really pick my spots and cash because of it.

I rented the "Bourne" series of movies and I look forward to watching them.

I watched "She’s All That" and "American Beauty" tonight.  "American Beauty" is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and "She’s All That" should be considered science fiction it is so ridiculous.

Finally, it’s been a while since I did a Top 10… so here it is:

My Top 10 Top 10 (My Favorite 10 Things At This Very Moment)

10. Text messaging

9. Turkey, Stuffing & Mashed Potato Bowl from Wawa

8. Sirius

7. Homicide reruns

6. Quoting Dr. Cox

5. Taylor Swift

4. Kid Nation

3. Sharkscope

2. My Blackberry Curve

Poker Light After Busy Weekend And Comments On Being A First Round Pick

Saturday and Sunday were fairly heavy poker days but not for buy-in tournaments and after a disappointing Saturday it was nice to recover on Sunday with a tournament win in the Surfers Poker After Dark Freeroll.  The win was worth $20 and an early lead in the PAD competition on Surfers.  Unfortunately, my Saturday results were tough to swallow falling short in the Silver $15k Freeroll and The Full Tilt Forum Freeroll.  I finished abruptly in the Silver Freeroll when AK walked into Aces and barely missed the "money" in the Full Tilt Forum Freeroll.  Then, my home game cash streak was snapped uneventfully when I was knocked out in 11th place out of 12 players… my worst finish in over a year.

Since then, work has consumed my time and I’ve only been able to play sparingly but with excellent results.  On Monday, I finished 4th in the $1 Ferguson Razz Tournament on Full Tilt for $28.37 and last night I was able to win two Sit & Gos (one PL Omaha Hi and one Razz) for a total of $20 profit.

Finally, this upcoming weekend, the 2nd Surfers Poker Team Event is taking place.  I was not part of the first Team Event and was a little surprised to see that I was the second overall pick in the Draft.  I was drafted to Ouchbadbeat’s team and I think that we have a pretty decent team going into the event this weekend.  There are 5 tournaments played with us being allowed to enter two players into each of the first 4 events and the 5th event being able to be played by everyone.  It looks like I might be playing the Razz and the Stud events but we’ll see.

This Weekend’s Poker Action - Five Game LAPT Cash Streak On The Line

The bankroll is at $1500 which puts me at 75% of my bare minimum goal.  I had a few Sit & Go cashes mixed in with a few bad beats.

I have a full slate this weekend:

2:45 PM Saturday -> Full Tilt 100k Full Tilt Poker Points Freeroll (Qualified during the week)

3:00 PM Saturday -> Full Tilt $15,000 Silver Iron Man Freeroll (Qualified in October)

9:00 PM Saturday -> LAPT Hold’em Eliminator Tournament - Check out the website for more details: LAPT Home Page

2:00 PM Sunday -> Surfers Poker Poker After Dark Freeroll

Only the home game costs any $$$ and I have a shot to win up to $2k.  Plus, I could really pull away on the leaderboard at my home game.

I attached a picture of my SharkScope Sit & Go graph.  I am close to my highest point… since July I went from -$325 to +$65.  I have done most of my damage playing PL Omaha Hi Sit & Gos and sometimes don’t even have to play very many hands to get into the money.

Bankroll Groundhog Day, A Home Game Tournament Win (Finally) & How ‘Bout Them Red Sox???

The bankroll is stuck at right around $1200.  It’s getting really grinding at this point, too!  I really can’t seem to make any ground towards the $2000 goal in almost two or three weeks.  I did qualify for the Iron Man Challenge again, though, and have a shot at moving up to the Silver Iron Man Challenge, also.  I blanked in the WSOSP, sleeping through the HORSE event today.

On Saturday, I won my first LAPT tournament in 25 tries and cashed for the 5th consecutive time.  The 5th consecutive cash is a record there and I’m the first player to bust the $2500+ plateau.  I’m also points leader for Season III… the first time in three seasons that I’ve actually held the points lead (this despite finishing top 5 in Season I and second in Season II).  It felt really good to finally win after so many opportunities.  I got completely smacked with the deck at the end and finished off the last 5 opponents.  The amazing part was 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd place were wiped out pretty quickly by me with Danny Doops going out in 5th at 2:33AM, Rob A. out in 4th at 2:43AM, Josh out in 3rd at 2:47AM and Kevin out in 2nd at 3:01AM.  It took me less than 30 minutes to finish off the last 4 players.

Finally, despite missing the Eagles pick in the NFL today, I did nail both LCS’s in baseball and am now looking at the tough task of picking the final series.  I think I have to ride the hot hand and take the Rockies.  How can you pick a team that is 21-1 in their last 22 games?  I can’t.
